The world might have stopped for a few months, but skin care never did. With more people at home, with lots of free time on their hands, it actually started going even faster! In fact, this year’s new skin care trends are expected to be more dynamic and diverse than ever before. Let’s take a look at the newest skin care trends in town!
Sounds silly, but for many people around the globe skin care was actually a great way to find peace during such a disastrous time. A skin care routine, simple yet complete, allowed people to find balance amidst all the chaos. I won’t go as far as to say that’s what’s kept us sane but hey, it sure helped.
Maybe this is why the skin care industry - unlike other industries - showed far less signs of damage throughout 2020. On the contrary, according to Nielsen data, online sales went up by 42 percent during the first half of the year. In a consumer report conducted by NPD Group in September 2020, 22% of respondents said the pandemic had changed their skin care habits for the better.
However, skin care habits did change throughout the pandemic, in order to accomodate sprouting demands - such as the need for a solution to maskne and products against the damages of blue light. The result? New skin care trends that you - as a beauty brand - need to be prepared for.

Finally, here are the skin care trends that will shape 2021.
At some point, even the clearest skin types encountered the much dreaded skin issue of 2020: maskne. There’s no escaping it! Or maybe there is?
How about skin care products infused with probiotics - the live bacteria living on the skin - to help restore its natural microbiome and maintain a healthy balance? Oh yeah, expect this trend to gain more and more popularity moving forward.
People’s stress levels hit an all-time high in 2020 due to the pandemic, and it’s time to cut them some slack. How? By helping them decompress while doing their skincare routine, with skin care products containing destressing ingredients, such as hemp, lavender and cinnamon.
Being prevented from going outside at all times, people have sat in front of a screen for more than what was considered healthy or acceptable till a couple years ago. On the bright side, this has sparked an unprecedented interest in HEV-blocking skin care products.
Scientifically known as high energy visible (HEV) light, "blue light" is emitted from tech screens and penetrates the skin, causing hyperpigmentation and early aging.
Piece of advice? You might wanna start looking into it: NPD reports that sales of blue light protecting skin care products increased by 170% in the first half of 2020.
If a few years ago you would have told me that hand sanitizers would have become popular, a literal must-have in the skin care world, I would have signed you off to a psych ward. But hey, I guess that’s life!
However, over 2020 people have soon had the chance to realize how drying - not to mention clinical-smelling - hand sanitizers can be. So? Ding ding, here’s a great opportunity for skin care brands to develop creative and less damaging sanitizer options: practical, yet pleasing, nourishing, yet germ-fighting formulas that actually help restore over sanitized hands.
